Before digital art, there was the pencil and paper. Sometimes that is all you can carry into the anatomy lab, so you better know how to use them.

In my undergraduate gross anatomy course, I kept an illustrated diary of each week’s dissection. Instead of aiming for textbook accuracy, I focused on what I saw - and tried to depict it as it was laid out before me. It is rare for an individual to mirror the examples we study from in books and in the classroom, a valuable lesson that cannot be learned anywhere but the lab.
